“Sapere aude” is a Latin phrase which means “dare to discern” or dare to know. It means to be enlightened, learn things and to make decisions based on rational knowledge. Marty Rosen, director of Library Services, said he is a strong believer in this.
Rosen’s career paths reflect this Latin phrase. As a writer for the Courier Journal and his position at IU Southeast, Rosen said he learns things on a daily basis.

Indiana’s Professional Standards Advisory Board has proposed a new set of licensing rules that could potentially affect IUS education students. The proposed Rules for Educator Preparation and Accountability, REPA, would require Indiana colleges to focus on giving their education students more content, rather than methods classes that teach future educators how to teach.
If the new rule is approved, secondary and elementary education students would then have to either major in education, with a minor in a certain content area or major in a content area and minor in education.

Towering above most, at 6-feet-6 inches is Brice Mitchell, business marketing sophomore and freshman forward for the Grenadiers basketball team.
In the first time meeting him, he may seem a little shy. He doesn’t talk much to people he doesn’t know, which may make it hard to carry on a conversation. Bring a few of his friends around and Mitchell opens up. He is also very close with his family.

When Megan Murphy, psychology sophomore and forward for the women’s basketball team, set foot on the IUS campus she knew she had found the place she wanted to spend her next four years. Murphy is from Bloomington and is further from her hometown than any other player on the IUS women’s basketball team.
“I liked the campus and how it was a smaller school setting,” Murphy said.
Murphy said she viewed going away for college as a benefit IU Southeast offered because it gave her the opportunity to meet new people.
“It is nice living on campus,” Murphy said. “A few of the other players do also, and my parents can still come to the games.”

Television commercials can stick out like a sore thumb.
They can be funny, weird, can make a statement or can say something memorable.
I recently turned on the television and saw the famous Chuck E. Cheese commercial advertising its famous slogan “Where a kid can be a kid.”
Throughout the commercial, children are seen having fun, enjoying their innocence.
But I ask myself what happens after a child leaves?
Some go home to a life of normalcy while others live in a reality of hell.
The hells I speak of are the hells of being poor, parentless, and physically and mentally abused.

Recently, there have been talks about expanding the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament field from 65 to either 68 or 96 teams.
This is a bad idea.
The NCAA Tournament is the single most exciting event in sports and if the field is expanded, it would take something away from it.
If the field were to expand to 68 teams, there would be four play-in games instead of the one play-in game under the current format.
This would keep four teams out of the actual tournament instead of one.
The idea of a play-in game was never a good one. It keeps a small school from having the opportunity to play against one of the big boys, and if the field is expanded, it would keep four from seizing this opportunity.

Every morning, I pour a tall glass of blue milk from Aunt Beru’s pitcher, and I think to myself of how much IU Southeast is like “Star Wars.”
I’ve been a student here for nearly three years. During all this time, there have been some times that have reminded me of those classic movies.
For example, The Commons is a lot like the Cantina on Tatooine. Think about it.
The Cantina’s music is way better, but there are all kinds of freaks sitting around.
The freaks I’m talking about are the ones sitting by themselves, looking at porn on their laptops.
I think I overheard one of them bragging about how he has the death sentence on 12 systems.
